I started this blog to share my enthusiasm for my favorite sport - Spinning/Indoor Cycling! As an instructor, it has become such a big part of my life and I love to share it with whomever I can.

FAQs and Tips

What is spinning?

In my mind, its a fun, intense, non-competitive class taught on stationary bikes. You will vary resistance levels and speeds throughout the ride. Great for most levels of fitness, very low impact and burns mega calories!

I took a class and now my "bits" and butt hurt!! Do I need a padded seat or something?

Everyone has that pain during their first few classes, its normal. The pain does go away as your body adjusts and gets used to the bikes. Don't panic!

What should I bring to class?

A positive attitude!! Water (at least 1oz for every minute of class), towel (you are going to sweat!), try not to wear really baggy pants, as they could get caught in the flywheel. If you have a heart rate monitor - great! If not, no biggie.

What is the deal with heart rate monitors?

HRM's are used to determine your different levels of effort. Most instructors use your heart rate to teach class. IE: "you should be between 70-75% of your maximum HR. They take the guess work out of what you should be doing in class.

Do I need those fancy clippy shoes?

They are wonderful, but not necessary. Most bikes have double - sided pedals. One side is to clip in your shoe. The shoes are very stiff with little cushioning, allowing for the most efficient pedal stroke. They also improve your form as they keep your ankle, knee, hip and spine in line. For what its worth, I couldn't imagine cycling without them!

Tip: if you are a beginner, show up to class early!! Its essential that the instructor helps you get set up properly on your bike. Most bikes have three adjustments: seat height, lateral seat movement, handle bar height.

*these tips are just "general rules", they do not work for everyone and each bike should be adjusted to each individual*

Seat Height - rule of thumb is that the seat height should be as high as your hip. You are set up correctly if your extended leg has about a 5-10 degree bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke. You should not have to point your toe to pedal.

Lateral Seat Adjustment - place elbow on the end of the seat, fingers should fully extend and just hit the handlebars.

Handlebar Height - adjust them to just slightly higher than your seat.
