12/19/11 & 12/20/11

This will be my last post until the New Year!!!  We leave for our vacation on Saturday and we will not return until 1/5/12.  If you are planning on attending my classes while I am gone, you are in good hands!  I have arranged for subs for all of my time slots.

I have a group of 4 people that are becoming my regular Monday night crowd.  One is a former pro baseball player, one is a future triathlete, one is an avid spinning enthusiast and the other is a young, athletic chick.  Needless to say, it is different and great experience to instruct such an athletic team!  As an instructor, it challenges me to push even harder!

Is anyone else feeling generally overwhelmed this holiday season?  I know it may sound a little cliche, but I honestly believe that working out and spinning in particular, is what is getting me through this December in one piece!  I find that while I am on the bike I am focused on just one thing - a great workout!  The errands I have to run, dinner I have to make and other little tasks just seem to go out of my brain for at least that one hour.

Flats, Hills and Climbs - Oh My!!

One of my readers (Hi Alli!) recently asked me to define what I mean when I describe the terrain in my blog.  I teach strictly by Spinnings guidelines, so what that means is that I choose from 1 of 5 different profiles when designing my ride.  http://www.spinning.com/images/Target_Heart.pdf

From there, I figure out what I would like my ride to look like paying close attention to where there heart rates will land.  Keep in mind, these are my interpretations on what I have learned through my certification and continuing education classes.
Flats = cadence: 80-110rpms, lower resistance, you can be in or out of the saddle.
Hills = cadence: 60-80rpms, moderate to heavier resistance, you can be in or out of the saddle.
Climbs = cadence: around 60 rpms, slow and steady with a super heavy gear, in or out of the saddle.
http://www.spinning.com/images/Cadence_Ranges.pdf

So, when I am ready to sit down and make up my ride, I go in this order:
1) decide what profile I would like (interval, strength, etc.).
2) design a ride according to the target heart rates in that profile.
3) choose music to help the class stay with a steady cadence.
4) listen to the music while visualizing the ride and make adjustments as needed.
5) teach a kick ass class!

I hope this helps!

I am a Spinning Machine!

Phew....where the heck did December go?  I can hardly believe that it is halfway through the month already and just days away from the holidays.  Statistically, this time of year I get less and less people in the saddle because they are often busy with holiday plans, shopping and/or parties, but this year is proving me wrong!  My classes have remained steady and I could not be more thrilled!  I think it is because the Revolution (myrevnow.com) is a wonderful place to work and workout.

I taught my first cycling class at Jeanie's last night (jeaniescustomfitness.com) and it was full!!  Granted, there are only 6 bikes (so far), but it still counts! I have an amazing group of family and friends to support me and also had a couple of new folks.  I was thinking about the dynamics of the participants last night: 1 future triathlete in his mid 20's, 1 former pro baseball player, a couple of younger chicks, my husband (who is not in his 20's, he,he!) and most of them were brand new to cycling.  It goes to show that cycling is for everyone!

As I mentioned, December is a busy time of year for everyone, including the instructors, so I have been picking up a lot of extra classes.  I have taught about 9 classes in the last 11 days and I keep picking up more and more!  I will be in killer shape for our upcoming cruise ;)

BIG NEWS!!!!

Yes, this news did warrant the title being in all caps, ha, ha!!  As most of you know, I have been teaching at the Revolution (myrevnow.com) on Tuesday and Thursday nights. I absolutely love being a part of that team and love teaching there.  They have great packages available and the studio is state of the art.

I have been asked to join another wonderful team at Jeanie's Custom Fitness Studio (jeaniescustomfitness.com) in Wilton, New York!!  I will be teaching there on Monday nights and Saturday mornings.  The studio only has 7 bikes currently, but I bet they will be looking to expand once people start introducing themselves to cycling.  Jeanie's also offers Zumba, personal training and a great bootcamp.  If any of you are local, check out the website or facebook page for more information!

True Revolution, 11/29/11

My body is finally feeling closer to being 90% healed and ready for some intense workouts! I did a really challenging workout on Tuesday night, but I made sure to coach to ALL levels of fitness.  The phrase I used was the "800 club", meaning, you could burn up to 800 calories during this ride.  It is totally up to you and what you want to get out of this workout.  If you are just here to have some fun, sweat a bit and listen to some good tunes, go ahead and burn those 200 calories.  Every single one counts!!!

Also, I used Spotify for the first time and I loved it!  I bought the "premium" membership for $9.99 so that I could access my music "offline", or when I do not have WIFI access.

Avoiding Weight Gain During the Holidays

Happy Tuesday Psycho's!  Since Thanksgiving is right around the corner, the main topic of conversation at the cycling studio has been about avoiding those extra holiday pounds.  While I am not a registered dietitian or a doctor, my advice is to just try to break even.  Enjoy the foods that you look forward to having and just workout more often.

As in many cultures, food and the idea of sitting down to a meal together is an important part of celebrating the holidays.  Maybe it is mom's cookies or your friend's mashed potatoes that gives you that feeling of "home" or nostalgia.  Don't try to cut those out completely because that could cause you to binge later on and have feelings if guilt or regret - that is not what the holidays are all about.

Below is an article that I thought was interesting, so I thought I would pass it along.  The main points are that on average, we will consume around 3200 calories on Thanksgiving. It only takes 3500 calories to gain a pound, so keep that in mind!!  In one cycling class you could burn up to 800 calories.  Let's all be thankful for that!

I am most thankful for my dedicated Psycho's for all of your hard work and support throughout the years.  Happy Thanksgiving!

True Revolution, 11/15/11

Do you ever just have a "fat day"?  I have been having a fat week it seems and I noticed myself getting a little OCD with workouts and calorie counting.  Luckily, I remembered what my Registered Dietitian had told me about all of that.  She said it is not a bad thing to think about your activity level and what you are putting into your body.  It is only a bad thing if you think about those things constantly.  So, this past week I have only weighed myself once and have stopped tracking my calories.  My weight is well within a healthy and normal range and I just need to settle down, lol!!!

I'm Baaaaaaack!!

Happy Friday Psycho's!!  After begging and pleading with my doctors, I am coming back to spin!!  I do not have 100%  clearance to spin "all out" like I usually do, but I am so excited to get to be on that bike again!  I basically just need to sit upright every now and again to give my muscles a break and I can't really bounce around a lot (not like we do that in spin anyhow).

So, if you are in the area on Tuesday and/or Thursday night, come and see me at the best cycling studio in the country!  Myrevnow.com to sign up!!

Tuesday 6:30pm - True Revolution (60 mins spin) or Thursday 6:45pm - ABsolute Revolution (45 mins spin, 15 mins abs).

Join me for my big come back!!

TGIF!!!

I think I have CWS.  Otherwise known as; cycling withdrawal syndrome.  It is characterised by lack of "woohoo-ing", lack of laughing while sweat drips into your eyes, dust on your clip-in shoes and a general feeling of "blah".

The good news is that I should be cleared to workout again either by 11/3 or the week after!!!!!  I had some personal/medical reasons why I couldn't come back sooner than I had originally thought.  Even better news, it can only get better from here!!

I am very lucky to have a supportive and caring boss and also a great team helping me out.  I hope to see you all in a week or two for my big comeback!!

Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Hello Psycho's!

Believe it or not, I did NOT fall off the face of the Earth!!!  For personal and health reasons, I need to stay off the bike for a few weeks.  It was 2 weeks at first, but now has been pushed to 3 weeks.  I cannot tell you how much I miss working out and teaching!  It is such a large and important part of my life and I really miss it.  I also miss seeing those smiling (and sweaty) faces out there each night.

In other news, I have decided to focus my attention and energy to one facility - The Revolution!!!  I will be continuing to teach on Tuesday nights and one additional night  - I am not sure if I am cleared to share that with you yet.  I have loved working there for the past year and I am really glad about my decision.

Tentatively, I am due back on 10/25, if all goes as planned!!

Do You Ever Wonder?

What a gloomy day it is in Upstate NY.  The best thing about a gloomy, rainy day is that lots of outdoor riders take it inside!!

I just read a fantastic article written by a Star 3 instructor about why instructors do the things we do and what it does to your body.  Specifically, why sprints are NOT designed to have you pedal as quickly as you can with low resistance, but rather, pedalling as fast as you can with very high resistance.

I always say there is a method to my madness.  Read the article below to pick up more tips!

9/11 Duathlon

Happy Monday Psycho's!!  Boy, my weekend was filled with lots of fun, sweat and learning!  Friday night I drove down to Poughkeepsie for the Les Mills Mega Quarterly event.  It is basically an opportunity for instructors to take classes from the world class trainers and learn from them.  I worked out for about 8 hours on Saturday and I learned so much!  I hope to be able to use this information in my own Bodypump class someday.

On Sunday, I participated in the Revolutions (myrevnow.com) first annual Duathlon to celebrate their one year anniversary.  I taught a 45 minute spin class followed by a 5k outside.  It was so great to have so many of my friends and family in the crowd.  While it was very challenging, we all got through it together and had a great time.

Here is the ride from the duathlon (99% member requested songs):

It is our 3 year anniversary!!!

Happy Monday.....er....Tuesday Psycho's!  Today my husband and I are celebrating our 3 year anniversary.  I totally believe in the phrase: "Couples that play together, stay together", so we will be cycling together for a couple of hours tonight since I have to teach.  I cannot think of a better way to spend our special day!!

I am so lucky to have him in my life, supporting me and loving me no matter what path I am on.  Alright, enough mush for today!  Here are some wedding pictures that still make me giddy!!

Laughing on the alter, like usual.

My favorite wedding picture. I remember this moment so vividly.

Spin 8/15/11

Good morning psycho's!! I hope you all had a great weekend.  I taught my usual 10:00 am Saturday class and then we headed to Boston with my step-daughter (after a shower of course).  We had a really great time and the weather was wonderful.

On the topic of weather, is anyone else in Upstate NY totally over the cold rainy stuff we have been getting?  I have so many cute dresses just waiting to make an appearance, but it has just been too chilly out.

The only good thing about rain is that it makes for a packed spin class!

You will notice two U2 songs in this ride.  A friend and frequent participant had been going through some tough times lately, so I thought the least I could do is add a few of her favorite songs into our ride last night.

This ride was formulated directly from a profile I received with my latest Spinning continuing education course.  It is a great way to keep your heart rate at a consistent pace, but it is a bit different from how I usually teach a class.  Always a good idea to keep things fresh!

Getting Personal...

As you might have gathered from my last post, we just got home from a great Las Vegas vacation on Wednesday.  About 2 weeks ago, I had interviewed to teach Bodypump at a studio located just north of the town that I live in.  The facility seems wonderful, as do the owners, but unfortunately, the time slots that were available I could not fill due to my super busy schedule.

A few days before leaving for vacation, another gym (again, north of my town) offered me a position to teach Bodypump.  I told them I would think about it and get back to them when I got back from our trip.  I could fit it into my schedule, but it would leave my week even busier than before.

For perspective, here is what my usual week looks like:

Monday - Friday 9am - 4pm(ish) office job
Monday - 5:30pm spin
Tuesday - 6pm spin, 7:15pm spin
Wednesday - 5:30pm spin
Saturday - 10:00 am spin

Usually on Thursdays I will either do boxing or yoga to get some "me" time in the week.  I will also try to lift weights either Monday or Wednesday with my husband before class.  Plus, it isn't just one hour of my day used for teaching, there is research, preparation, set up, break down, meet/greet, travel time, etc. that works into that as well.

After much consideration, I decided not to take the Bodypump position offered to me (Thursday nights) because even though physically it wouldn't be a problem, mentally it didn't seem like the best idea.  I am not complaining at all and I LOVE teaching and would not give up any of my classes for anything in the world, but sometimes you need to take a step back and look at things from another perspective.  I feel incredibly lucky to work in two beautiful facilities now and have such great members/friends that I get to see everyday, but this trip really made me realize that taking care of myself is just as important as taking care of others.

I also love working in the office for/with my husband.  Although, he has mentioned to me a few times that I could hire someone to do my job here so that I could teach on a more full-time basis, it just never seemed like the right thing to do in my mind.  I could also just be a "stay at home wife" if I wanted to, but that is NOT an option for me either considering my high energy level ; )

Basically, where I am going with this blah, blah, blah post is that you have to appreciate the life you have and you also should celebrate your successes often.  I am going to cherish my Thursday nights off and I am hoping that I have made the right choice.  I know that the window of opportunity was left open for me, so I guess if I did change my mind, I would have a couple of options out there.  Again, I am very fortunate to be appreciated and "wanted" on some degree, but I also need to appreciate myself a little more.

Okay, mega vent over!  Back to your regularly scheduled blogging ; )

Spin 7/19/11 Vegas Baby!!!

My husband and I just got back from a fabulous trip to Las Vegas.  We stayed at the Encore and had a really great time.  My husband actually won some money, so that makes it fun!  We lounged by the pool all day, ate really extravagant meals and managed to drink some champagne and dance at night.  We even got invited to David Hasslehoff's birthday party!  Random - yes!  We went to the Playboy comedy club on Friday and that was also pretty fun.

Here is the ride I put together for the day before my trip.

Spin 7/10/11

I subbed a class for an instructor at the Revolution (myrevnow.com) on Sunday morning and it was a blast!!!  I had the best time and the crowd was just full of energy!  I even got to catch up with a few folks that I haven't seen in a few weeks or months.

I had some requests for "metal" and "80's hair bands".  That style of music really isn't my "thing", but I dug deep into the music archives and found some songs that I thought fit the bill.   When the members are happy, I am happy!!

So, I asked the participants to picture a pyramid for this ride.  The first half of class we would be going up, up, up.  The last half of class we would be descending our "mountain".

My Review: Estudio Part II

A few weeks ago, I did my first review of Estudio's new location in Clifton Park(http://acyclepsycho.blogspot.com/2011/06/my-review-estudio-in-clifton-park-hot.html).

I was fortunate enough to attend another hot power yoga class last night at the Estudio with Melissa.  Let me tell you psycho's, if you are looking for a serious calorie burning, core shredding, detoxifying workout, this is the one for you!

Melissa took us through a powerful and fast paced flow class that constantly challenged me and kept me smiling at the same time.  I really enjoy this class because we are constantly moving and you can really feel the strengthening and lengthening benefits right away.  I am not sure if I would recommend this to a first timer unless you are able to do planks, push ups and tricep pushups on your toes over and over again without too much trouble.

Melissa is there to assist you and coach you through the class offering up options if you need them.  She also always includes motivating and almost spiritual guidance throughout the hour.  While she looks like she can conquer the world, Melissa is humble and I find it very easy to relate to her.  In other studio's, I have found myself feeling inadequate or even in competition with the instructor, which is never a comfortable situation.  This will never be the case at the Estudio.

I hope you all get a chance to check out their fun schedule which includes everything from beginner hot yoga, beginner barre strength, hot vinyasa and much more.

TGIF!!

Spin 6/27/11 and an Update

Good Morning!  So, we all survived Monday, eh?  Saturday and Sunday for 9 hours each day, I was hovering, planking, pushing up, crunching and sweating.  I had my Les Mills CX30  (http://www.lesmills.com/global/cx30/cx30-group-fitness-class.aspx)  training and passed!!!  This program is a 30 minute all core workout that is so revolutionary.  They also incorporate the use of a tube (not band, lol) to get maximum results.   I am sore all over, but it was worth every drop of sweat.

Just like when I was going through my Bodypump (http://www.lesmills.com/northeast/bodypump/bodypump-group-fitness-class.aspx) training, we had to pass an initial training and then we must send in a video of ourselves teaching the entire class from start to finish to be evaluated.  I hope to have my video submitted by the end of July.

Anywho.....onto my ride from last night.  Just like the perfect recipe for dinner, I had the best ingredients in my class last night.  Laughter, hard work, organization and FUN!!!

The last two weeks we concentrated on strength, so these next rides will be more focused on endurance.

Happy Summer fellow psycho's!!!!  As I have mentioned in previous posts, summertime in our office is our busy season.  I haven't been making brand new playlists for each class because I am at two different locations with all different crowds (read: no one hears the same list twice).  I do tweak a song or two, but here is the general outline.  To get myself and my participants out of a "plateau" in their workouts and to prevent any sort of boredom with the routines, I had them try out a different format.  We did two similar songs in a row for the entire workout.  It keeps a more consistent heart rate which in turn, allows you to burn maximum calories.

This interval ride allows participants that may be feeling a "plateau" in their workouts or weight loss to bust out of it!  I ended up burning 100 more calories than usual during this ride.  There isn't much recovery time and your heart rate is in the higher range for longer periods of time.

Warm Up

Running/Standing Flats

Billie Jean On the Storm - Amoraboy

Climb
Leave out all the Rest - Linkin Park

My Review: Estudio in Clifton Park (hot power yoga)

Last night I had the pleasure of attending a hot power yoga class with my good friend Melissa at the Estudio in Clifton Park (http://www.estudiohot.com/).   The studio is conveniently located just of of the Northway at Exit 9.  The owners have taken a lot of thought into how a studio should feel, not just how it should look and they nailed it!  The colors are the wall are warm and calming, as is the rest of the space.  The room was nice and hot so that we could sweat out some toxins and also so our bodies could really get in a good stretch.

Melissa teaches a very nice, flowy, challenging and fun class.  She is really easy to talk to and has tons of experience and education to get anyone through a class, whether you are experienced or a beginner.  It was really nice to hear her joke about holding a martini on our thighs while in warrior pose!  We all needed a laugh at that point!  Let's put it this way, my triceps along with the rest of my body are bit sore today, but it is a good sore!!

The Estudio offers a variety of different classes at all different times, so check them out online to see what works best for you.  I believe they also offer package deals on their classes.

I hope to see you there soon!

Spin 6-1-11 - All U2 for a Birthday Girl!

My lovely and devoted cycle psycho friend Megan celebrated her birthday on the bike with me instead of at dinner with her husband.  So, when she asked me to play her all U2 mix that she made herself, I was delighted!   It was a huge hit and I had a huge crowd with me that night!

Below, it is formatted differently because I basically copied and pasted her email to me describing what she would like ; )

My apologies for my week of no posts!  Sometimes life and my other 18 jobs get in the way of my blogging.  I teach 5 times a week and although I usually have 4 different playlists in a week that I use, I have realized that blogging all of them is just too unrealistic given my schedule.  So, my promise to you all is to try to put at least 2 playlists/rides/profiles on here a week.

Weekly Workouts in Review

TGIF my fellow cycle psycho's!!!  I haven't posted my weekly workouts for some time, so I thought I would take some time to outline it for you.  Keep in mind, this was not a totally typical week, as I have had a regular class added to my schedule (Tues. 7:15pm) and also subbed for someone on Thursday.  It felt great to teach and motivate that many times in a week, but I found it a little tricky to fit in my own workouts.

Sunday: Rock n Run 5k (finished in 30 minutes - which is fast for this non-runner!)
Monday: lifted heavy - chest and back, taught spin 5:30pm - 6:20pm
Tuesday: ABsolute revolution (45 min. spin 15 min. abs) 6:00 - 7:00pm, taught one hour spin 7:15-8:15pm
Wednesday: taught spin 5:30- 6:20pm
Thursday: bodypump then taught spin 5:30-6:20pm
Friday: OFF
Saturday: teaching spin 9 - 11am

I would have liked to work in some yoga, but with a full time job and teaching all the time, I just couldn't carve out that window of time.  Next week should slow down a bit because there are no classes (or office work!) on Monday due to the holiday and I am going to yoga for sure on Thursday.  If you are local, check my blog in a week or so for my review of the Estudio in Clifton Park (http://www.estudiohot.com/).

Be safe and enjoy your weekend!

Spin 5/21/11 & Spin 5/23/11

Saturday was not only a beautiful day in Upstate NY, but also the day that many college students graduated.  Congratulations to all of the 2011 scholars!  That being said, my Saturday class only had 2 participants, so I played the same profile/playlist yesterday as well.

I am hoping that the gym will take my suggestion to implement a once or twice a month "begin to spin" class to get more people involved in all of our fun.  On the other hand, the spin studio where I work has been jam packed for weeks, which is always great to see.

This is sort of an "interval" profile - we do three rounds of work, with active recoveries in between.  It keeps your heart rate in the 85-92% MHR through the 3 rounds, which leads to major calories burned.

Warm Up/Running/Standing Flats
Give Me Everything - Pitbull

Spin 5-16-11 and ABsolute Revolution 5-17-11

I have gotten myself into the habit of making one spin profile (ride) for Monday night at High Rock Sports and Fitness (hrsfitness.com) and then just adding a few songs for my ride at The Revolution (myrevnow.com).  It seems to work out quite nicely because they are totally different facilities usually with totally different participants.  So, off we go!

This ride was designed to keep riders in the endurance energy zone.  I can say personally, I burned about 90 more calories than usual by keeping my heart rate in a consistent zone.  I heard a few groans and saw some red faces, but overall, I think we managed to have fun!!

BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the caps were appropriate for this one, lol!!  I just found out last night that I am officially certified to teach Bodypump!!!!  It has been such a long journey and I feel so relieved to know that I passed!

I went through the 3 day (27 hour) initial training at the end of January.  The next step is to submit a video of yourself teaching an entire class from start to finish.  If you are not familiar with Les Mills programs, they basically give you tons of cues, form, choreography, etc. to learn and it is a lot to remember.  I had 4 months to do my video, but got it done in one month because, well, I am that kind of weirdo and wanted to get it done a.s.a.p.

7 weeks later, I finally got emailed the results of my assessment and I passed!  Phew!!!  I am so beyond excited and relieved all at the same time.

Now, lets cross our fingers that my gym gives me a class ;)

Lucky Friday the 13th Ride!

On Friday the 13th at 6pm I will be teaching a 45 minute ride followed by a nutritional seminar "talk" at the revolution (myrevnow.com).  They haven't mentioned it on their site yet because there are so many other things going on and they didn't want to overwhelm everyone.

So, now you have the inside scoop!  You can sign up online at any point.

It will be a great way to start to understand your body and what food is used for!!  I hope to answer as many questions as I can and pass on my knowledge of nutrition.

Hello my fellow Cycle Psycho's and happy Wednesday!  I attended a Spinning continuing education course this past Sunday that was all about nutrition.  I am hoping to be able to share this knowledge with the two places that I teach, via a 30 minute seminar followed by a ride.

If you are local, keep checking in here for updates on a date for that to happen : )

Have a great day!

Spinning 4-18-11 and Ab-Solute Revolution 4-19-11

My spinning class on 4/18 takes 50 minutes including warm up and cool down, so for my 60 minute Ab-Solute revolution, I have added a couple of songs.  Listed is the entire 60 minute ride.

This profile (ride) was designed by a master instructor.  I simply just replaced their songs with my own.  From what I heard last night and this morning, it was a killer workout that left everyone a little sore.  Hey, no pain no gain!!!
